Part of Branding tools an agency hands over: gated checks
Agency brand templates: Canva or Adobe Express handover?
Hiring a branding agency to build your templates? How Canva Business and Adobe Express Teams compare on locked brand elements, evidence and list-price ranges.
What to take away
- When a branding agency delivers editable brand templates, the platform it builds them on decides whether your team can adapt them without breaking the logo, colours or fonts.
- For templates a branding agency hands over to your team, the provisional pick is Adobe Express Teams, for the lock step where a colleague adapts an approved template without altering protected elements.
- Adobe names locked elements as a control and publishes an accessibility conformance report dated February 2025. Canva Business names Brand Kits, lockable colours and fonts, approvals and folders, with no dated tenant report.
- At ten seats on annual billing, published list prices imply about £1,440 to £1,728 a year for Canva Business and £1,152 to £1,440 for Adobe Express Teams, VAT at 20% included.
- Both stay on hold until the order form, a VAT-inclusive quote and the fixture test result arrive.
Why the platform matters when you hire a branding agency
A branding agency builds the identity and, often, the templates your staff will use every week after the project ends. The agency usually asks which platform your team runs, and the answer shapes the handover: the locks it sets are only worth paying for if your colleagues can keep using them without breaking the logo, colours or fonts. That makes the platform part of the brief you give an agency, not an afterthought.
Why Adobe Express Teams takes the lock step
For a client deciding which platform its branding agency should build on, Adobe Express Teams wins provisionally because its supplier page names locked elements as a control, and Adobe's February 2025 Express accessibility conformance report gives criterion-level findings; our quality checklist explains how to review such evidence. Canva Business leads on approvals, folders and template volume.
Canva's Business brand controls page states Brand Kits, lockable colours and fonts, templates, approvals and folders. These are supplier claims for the page inspected, not behaviour observed in a buyer account.
One limit covers the whole comparison: neither service was configured in a live account, so the call rests on supplier pages, privacy records and accessibility material rather than hands-on use.
Evidence on file, by criterion
Canva Business
- Named edition
- Business
- Brand control named
- Brand Kits, lockable colours and fonts, templates, approvals, folders
- Privacy record
- Supplier trust material inspected
- Accessibility record
- Page links conformance material; no dated tenant report
- List price, typical 2026
- £10 to £12 per user per month, annual, VAT extra
- Seat minimum
- Unconfirmed publicly
Adobe Express Teams
- Named edition
- Teams
- Brand control named
- Brand kits, locked elements, comments, review
- Privacy record
- Supplier policy inspected
- Accessibility record
- February 2025 conformance report inspected
- List price, typical 2026
- £8 to £10 per seat per month, annual, VAT extra
- Seat minimum
- Confirm in the quote
Canva's accessibility page links conformance material without a dated tenant-level report. A dated report is still not proof that a 2026 tenant or an exported file passes.
Like-for-like cost at ten seats
Canva Business
- Per seat per month, annual billing
- £10 to £12
- Ten seats, one year, excluding VAT
- £1,200 to £1,440
- Ten seats, one year, including VAT at 20%
- £1,440 to £1,728
Adobe Express Teams
- Per seat per month, annual billing
- £8 to £10
- Ten seats, one year, excluding VAT
- £960 to £1,200
- Ten seats, one year, including VAT at 20%
- £1,152 to £1,440
Ten seats is an illustrative count, and Canva's seat minimum is unconfirmed, so a smaller team may not qualify for these figures. Adobe states that Express Teams requires a two-seat minimum, which ten seats clears. The VAT-inclusive gap runs at about £288 a year at both ends of the range.
Price comparisons only work when currency, VAT, seat count, period and included services match. Budgeting for a branding agency from defined scope to VAT treatment shows how to normalise a quote before you rank suppliers.
Example: one fixture pack, two suppliers
One fixture pack, two suppliers
- Build the fixturean approved master, a deliberately wrong logo, an expiring stock image, alternative text and one locked text field.
- Set the same roles in both accountsowner, editor and external reviewer.
- Run the same sequencecreate, attempt an unauthorised change, reject it, restore the version, then hand the file over.
- Export after each step and score both suppliers against the same pass rules.
The export result is the concrete behaviour the supplier pages leave open. Pass means the collaborator's download shows the approved lock intact. Fail means a substituted logo or a moved element appears in the file.
Reject a candidate that cannot protect a locked element, preserve approval evidence, support the required accessible task or return usable files.
Candidate decision boundary
Can the candidate protect a locked element?
continue to workflow fit and cost
reject candidate and retain manual baseline
Privacy, security, accessibility, intellectual property and procurement are separate gates, with finance as a sixth. Choosing branding agency tools through controlled trials and separate gates explains why strength in one gate cannot offset failure in another.
Before you sign anything
If a branding agency is building the templates for you, tell it which of the two platforms your team will run, so it sets locks your staff can keep after handover.
- Confirm the seat minimum, then ask for a VAT-inclusive quote at that exact count.
- Request the order form, renewal terms and support terms in writing.
- Ask for the content and AI licence terms, plus administrator ownership.
- Request the subprocessor list and the export, deletion and client-transfer routes.
Before you act
- Ask for exact order form and renewal terms
- Confirm purchased edition before relying on controls
- Build neutral fixture pack with locked text field
- Define pass evidence before supplier tests
- Run tests with synthetic assets only
- Recheck every source before purchase
Canva's privacy trust page describes Business data terms, processing arrangements and transfer material. Your own contract and data flow still need confirming.
Ask each supplier to name the contracting entity, the support hours and the data residency of the tenant you will buy. Renewal uplift and exit assistance belong in the same request.
When you shortlist branding agencies, ask each one which platform it builds templates on, whether it has handed over locked templates before, and who keeps administrator rights after the project. Recheck every source before you sign, because list prices and report dates move. If both offers fail the fixture, keep the manual baseline rather than forcing a winner.
Common questions
Why does Adobe Express Teams take the provisional verdict?
Adobe names locked elements and publishes a dated conformance report. Canva's case is stronger on approvals, folders and template volume, which sit outside the lock step.
What would flip the verdict?
A fixture test where Canva holds a lock, keeps approval evidence and exports a usable file that Adobe cannot match. Contract terms from both suppliers could move it too.
Is Canva Business still worth a quote?
Yes, if approvals and template volume drive the work and the ten-seat price gap is affordable. The verdict covers one workflow, not the whole toolset.
