Costs and pricing
Part of Budgeting for a branding agency: a worked example and VAT treatment
What a branding agency cost guide can honestly say about fees
A branding agency cost guide for England should separate quotations, payroll evidence, tax treatment and price indices without inventing fee ranges.
What to take away
- England fee bands are editorial estimates, not quotations, and run from roughly £8,000 for a small studio identity to £250,000 and above for a full rebrand.
- No verified average exists for England as a whole, so compare quotations only when deliverables, rights and review rounds match.
- Treat figures as net of VAT unless a quotation says otherwise, and keep net, VAT and gross as separate fields.
- Ask about deposits and payment dates before you sign, because schedules vary between agencies.
Editorial fee bands for branding work in England
The bands below are editorial estimates for 2026. They are not quotations and not sourced averages. They sit between the day rates studios publish on their own websites and the employee payroll floor implied by ONS ASHE. Set a written specification before you rely on any figure, as this benchmark method explains.
Editorial fee bands
| Project | Typical estimate | What usually sits inside |
|---|---|---|
| Small studio identity | £8,000 to £25,000 | Logo, colour palette, typography, basic guidelines |
| Mid-sized agency identity | £25,000 to £60,000 | Identity system, tone of voice, rollout templates |
| Large consultancy rebrand | £60,000 to £250,000 | Research, strategy, naming, phased rollout |
| Global rebrand | £500,000 and above | Multi-market research, legal checks, launch support |
All figures are net of VAT. Day rates run about £350 to £600 for a freelance brand designer and £1,000 to £2,500 for a senior consultancy team. Naming often adds £10,000 to £30,000 and brand strategy £20,000 to £80,000.
What each band usually includes and excludes
Deliverables decide whether a band applies. A small studio estimate may exclude research, naming and rollout support, which reappear as change requests. Check whether editable source files, a full brand book, photography and trademark searches sit inside the fee.
Quotations, deposits and payment schedules
A written quotation is evidence for one buyer, scope and validity period. Capture pounds sterling, the issue date, net price and VAT wording, plus gross cash due and the expiry date. Describe the quantity and unit beside each line, such as an accepted phase or an approved hour.
Quotation evidence to capture
- Pounds sterling and issue date
- Net price and VAT wording
- Gross cash due and payment dates
- Expenses and unit beside each line
- Excluded or unknown items marked
Do not compare totals until the offers share deliverables, review rounds and rights. Check implementation, handover and the end date too, and mark anything absent as excluded or unknown.
Deposits and staged payments are common. A funding schedule often starts with a deposit on signature, then stage payments against completed phases, with the balance on handover. Ask for the dates and the unit each payment covers, then fix termination and expense terms using the contract clauses guide before work starts.
Limits of the evidence: ASHE, employer rates and indices
The ONS ASHE methodology covers employee earnings and paid hours only. It excludes self-employed people and cannot produce a loaded project rate for a named agency team. No index gives the pound price paid for an England branding project, so treat every band here as an editorial estimate.
The ONS ASHE methodology was released on 18 January 2023 and describes employee earnings estimates across UK industries, occupations and regions. If you use it as a reasonableness check, record the edition, geography, occupation code and pay period. Do not mix hourly earnings with annual employment cost.
HMRC employer rates for 2026 to 2027 apply from 6 April 2026 to 5 April 2027. Use the applicable category and threshold from the live table, not one percentage as a universal labour loading.
The ONS services producer price inflation dataset reports UK service price indices on a 2015 = 100 basis. The latest two quarters are provisional and four quarters can be revised. An index shows movement, not the price paid.
HMRC's charging VAT page separates net, VAT and gross amounts. Record currency, net amount, rate used, VAT amount, gross cash and any recoverable amount for each cost. Recovery depends on registration, business use and records, so confirm the treatment with a qualified adviser. The site's budget template with a VAT field keeps those columns in order.
Comparing two quotations fairly
- Put both offers in pounds sterling on the same date, then strip VAT so each has a net total.
- Match deliverables, review rounds, file formats, rights and rollout support line by line.
- Price the gapsask each agency what an excluded item would cost as a named change.
Common questions
How much does a branding agency cost in England?
Editorial estimates for 2026 put a small studio identity at £8,000 to £25,000, a mid-sized agency identity at £25,000 to £60,000 and a large consultancy rebrand at £60,000 to £250,000, all net of VAT.
Why is there no verified average fee?
Because no published transaction sample isolates branding-agency engagements in England. The sources that do exist answer narrower questions about supplier quotations, employee pay, tax treatment and price movements.
Are the fee bands net or gross of VAT?
They are net of VAT. Add VAT at the rate that applies to your supply, then track gross cash separately because recovery depends on your registration and business use.
What deposit should I expect?
Schedules vary with agency size and scope. A deposit on signature followed by payments against completed phases is common, so ask for dates, amounts and the unit each payment covers before signing.
